n the past three years, Huawei has helped
seven cities win International Smart City
Awards, so the company is exceptionally
well positioned to assist South African cities
to achieve their Digital Transformation goals.
The Huawei Smart City Solution is
comprised of leading new information and
communication technologies aimed at building
a smart city nervous system with all things
sensing, connected, and intelligent. Smart
Streetlight – ideal for energy saving city
construction – is just one of the advantages
of this incredible solution. For example, in the
city of Weifang in China, more than 40, 000
streetlights have been reconstructed based on
NB-Internet of Things (IoT).
As a result, the operations and
maintenance (O&M) efficiency has improved
by 45%, the lighting rate has increased by 25%
and the annual electricity consumption has
been reduced by 6.8 million kWh. In a South
Africa constantly challenged by an energy
crisis – this solution holds immense promise
for the conservation of power and better
service delivery through enhanced O&M.
Smart parking also delivers brand-new
parking services to inner city areas by
accurately and quickly detecting parking
space occupation status. Smart Water gives
a real-time full picture of the city lifeline.
Again, in Weifang, the ‘smart river chief’
solution – based on eLTE – is recording the
state and quality of water in real time.
The key success factors for smart city
construction include breaking data silos and
restructuring processes; strong execution
teams with high level planning, coordinated
construction and iterative evolution.
Huawei has unmatched experience in all
aspects of smart city planning, consultation,
project management, engineering services
and implementation. This experience also
extends to smart campuses which play an
important role in people’s work and life.
By leveraging emerging ICT technologies,
such as cloud computing, IoT, Big Data and
Artificial Intelligence, Huawei’s Smart Campus
Solution addresses challenges to traditional
campuses including: low management
efficiency; poor service experience; serious
energy waste; weak security and high

operational costs. The solution implements
Digital Transformation of campuses; it
fuels innovative industry development and
enhances service experience.
Huawei is committed to building the
Digital Enablement Platform, redefining the
campus service architecture. This platform
is compatible with various terminals and
supports diverse applications to integrate
data, visualise the campus status, manage all
services and control events. By constructing
secure, comfortable, efficient, green, and
smart campuses, the solution provides
better service experiences for campus users
and operational excellence for campus
operators, thereby unleashing more business
and social benefits. Meanwhile, smart hotels’
demand for new services such as 4K HD
videos also require higher bandwidths plus
anywhere, anytime Internet access.
In addition to conventional services
such as, telephone and TV services, hotel
networks gradually begin to carry full
services, such as video surveillance, Wi-
Fi, smart control over guest rooms and
environment perception.
Seamless Wi-Fi connections are required
for places such as guest rooms, corridors,
halls, dining room and meeting rooms.
These full services are diverse, intelligent
and mobile. Economical operation is
crucial as hotels require networks which
are easy to deploy and maintain because
with larger establishments there will be
many guest rooms distributed across wide
areas. Huawei’s AgilePOL solution meets
all requirements for developing services
including wireless access, wired access, video,
voice and guest room surveillance. Huawei
has come up with the idea of building all-
optical smart hotels, and creating a model
of ‘one room, one line, and ‘N’ services’ for
hotels. The solution satisfies the mounting
demands on hotel information systems and
simplifies networking and management.
One room has one fibre that supports
three wavelengths and bears full services
(including voice, data and video) only one
ONT per room and one network covers all
areas in the hotel and satisfies demands of
all access scenarios.
The customer benefits gained through
Huawei’s AgilePOL network is that all services
for guest rooms can be carried uniformly,
and new services can be fast deployed. The
strategy of ‘one room, one fibre’ accelerates
network deployment and maintenance, and
reduces cable routing space in equipment
rooms. Dynamic bandwidth allocation and
hierarchical quality of service (HQoS) enables
flexible configuration of user bandwidths,
simpler network management and better
user experiences.
The solution is already deployed around
the world, with the five-star Madinat
Jumeirah luxury hotel in Dubai as one
example of a successful implementation.
It needed a premium ICT network to
meet users’ increasingly high demands
and improve their experience. It needed to
simplify cable routing in guest rooms and
required plans to decrease network failure
rates and improve O&M efficiency.
Huawei’s Agile POL solution supports
fibre to the room which simplifies network
structures and reduces maintenance costs.
Each guest room has an ONT which supports
the access of multiple services, such as voice,
broadband and video. Instead of deploying
various systems, this hotel can use only one
fibre to bear all services. Moreover, public
areas have full Wi-Fi coverage.
A GPON network bears all services,
including video surveillance, information
release and POS card swiping. GPON type
B dual-homing protection can also improve
network reliability. The result is a hugely
efficient smart hotel leading to richer
customer experiences for guests.
